Full-size Compound Crossbows

Choosing a full-size compound crossbow

A full-size compound crossbow combines high performance with a stable shooting platform and is particularly suitable when precision, range and performance are important. Its cam and cable system allows relatively short, rigid limbs to transfer a high amount of energy to the bolt.

Do not choose by draw weight or FPS alone. Width, total weight, cocking system, maintenance, technical complexity and the correct bolts and target all determine which full-size compound crossbow best suits your needs.

Which full-size compound crossbow is right for you?

Full-size compound crossbows are designed around a different set of priorities from compact pistol or mid-size platforms. The emphasis is primarily on stability, precision, high performance and a full shoulder-supported shooting position. There can still be major differences between individual models. Some are relatively light and accessible, while others focus on maximum velocity, an exceptionally narrow cocked width or an integrated crank cocking system.

The most powerful or fastest crossbow is therefore not automatically the best choice. A model with slightly less velocity but easier cocking, lower weight or simpler maintenance may be much better suited to your actual use.

Look beyond draw weight and FPS

Higher draw weight or maximum bolt speed does not automatically mean a better crossbow. More performance can also mean greater loads on the string, cables, cams, bolts and target, increased cocking requirements and more maintenance. Always compare the complete platform.

What makes a full-size compound different?

A compound crossbow uses cams, cables and a string together with the limbs. This geometry allows a large amount of energy to be stored while keeping the limb assembly relatively narrow, particularly when cocked.

This provides clear advantages in velocity, precision and handling, but the mechanism is also more complex than a traditional recurve crossbow. Keeping the string, cables and cams in good condition is therefore more important.

Three different directions within full-size compound

Within the range, three distinct buying reasons stand out:

Hori-Zone Sirius III – strong all-round performance

The Sirius III combines high performance with a relatively narrow cocked profile and a full-size shooting platform. It is a strong choice when precision, velocity and a balanced combination of size and performance are the main priorities.

Killer Instinct TEMPR-X 405 – compact and technically refined

The TEMPR-X combines approximately 405 FPS with a very narrow compound front end and an X-Cam system with 56% let-off. It is therefore particularly interesting when high performance is required alongside compact handling and a more efficient cocking cycle.

EK Archery Vulcan 415 Silent Crank – performance with maximum cocking comfort

The Vulcan 415 is aimed at shooters who want very high performance combined with an integrated silent crank cocking system. EK specifies 415 FPS performance and up to 94% reduction in cocking effort. Its main proposition is therefore not simply power, but power combined with cocking comfort.

Precision and range

A stable shoulder position, good trigger, suitable optics and consistent bolts are at least as important for precision as maximum speed. Full-size compound crossbows generally provide a stable shooting platform and are therefore particularly attractive when precision at longer shooting distances matters more than achieving the smallest possible overall dimensions.

Cocking system: an often underestimated difference

A powerful compound crossbow must be cocked again after every shot, making the cocking system an important practical consideration. A rope cocker is simple and light but requires more physical effort. A crank system can reduce that effort substantially, but adds weight, mechanical complexity and cost.

If you shoot repeatedly or find high draw weights difficult to manage, an effective crank system can therefore be more valuable in practice than a few additional FPS.

Weight and width are different considerations

A narrow compound crossbow is not automatically lightweight. A model can be extremely narrow between the cams yet still be relatively heavy because of its stock, rail, crank and other components. Compare cocked width, total weight and overall length separately. Additional weight can improve stability while aiming, while a lighter crossbow may be more comfortable during longer shooting sessions or transport.

Full-size compound or compact compound?

A compact compound such as the Drakon or FMA Supersonic focuses on minimum dimensions, low weight and an integrated cocking solution. A full-size compound provides a longer, more stable shooting platform and is particularly relevant when precision, range and performance outweigh absolute compactness.

If your priority is the smallest possible compound crossbow, choose the Compact Compound category. If you want a full shoulder-fired platform where stability and performance are central, this is the appropriate category.

Full-size compound or full-size recurve?

A full-size recurve has a simpler mechanical design with fewer moving components. Maintenance and string replacement are generally more straightforward. The trade-off is that recurve crossbows are usually wider and generally deliver less performance for a comparable overall platform size.

A full-size compound is particularly interesting when you want a narrow cocked limb assembly, higher performance and a more advanced technical platform and accept the additional complexity and maintenance requirements.

Correct bolts are essential

Only use bolts specifically suitable for the individual crossbow model. Length, total weight, nock type and construction must match the crossbow. An unsuitable or excessively light bolt can reduce reliability and may cause damage on high-performance compound platforms. Always inspect bolts for damage before use.

Match the target to the performance

Full-size compound crossbows can produce substantial bolt speed and energy. A standard target designed for a lightweight bow is therefore not automatically suitable. Use a crossbow target with adequate stopping power for the specific performance level. This becomes particularly important with models around 400 FPS and above.

String, cable and cam maintenance

Regularly inspect the string and cables for wear, damage and fraying and follow the manufacturer's maintenance instructions. Keep the rail and other relevant moving components properly maintained. As performance increases, early detection of wear becomes increasingly important.

In short
  • Choose the Sirius III for a strong balance of full-size stability, high performance and a compact compound width.
  • Choose the TEMPR-X 405 when a narrow, relatively compact high-performance platform is the priority.
  • Choose the Vulcan 415 Silent Crank when high performance combined with maximum cocking comfort is most important.
  • Do not choose on draw weight or FPS alone: also compare weight, width, cocking system, maintenance and ease of use.
